A quality multi-layer, custom-fit cover used daily outdoors typically lasts 2–4 years before the waterproof coating and UV resistance noticeably degrade. Covers used only occasionally (weekends, travel) last considerably longer. Budget single-layer covers tend to lose their waterproofing within a single monsoon season of daily use.
Cleaning
- Shake off loose dust before washing rather than wetting it in first — this reduces the amount of grit that gets ground into the fabric.
- Hand wash with a mild detergent in cool water; avoid harsh detergents or bleach, which break down waterproof coatings faster.
- Avoid machine washing/drying unless the manufacturer specifically says the cover is machine-safe — the agitation and heat can damage coated fabric and elastic hems.
- Let it air dry fully before folding and storing — packing away a damp cover leads to mildew and odour.
Storage
Store the cover loosely folded in a dry place rather than tightly compressed for long periods — this helps the fabric and any coating retain flexibility and reduces cracking at fold lines over time.
Signs it's time to replace
- Water no longer beads on the surface and instead soaks in.
- Visible cracking or peeling of the coating, especially at fold lines.
- Elastic hem has lost tension and no longer holds the cover snugly.
- Tears or thinning fabric at high-friction points like mirror pockets.
