How to Install & Remove a Car Cover Properly (Step-by-Step)
Before you cover the car
- Make sure the car is clean and dry — dust and grit trapped under a cover acts like sandpaper against the paint when the cover shifts in wind.
- Fold in the side mirrors if your cover has dedicated mirror pockets — this helps them seat correctly.
- Retract the antenna if it's a manual/removable type.
Putting the cover on
- Identify the front and back of the cover — most custom-fit covers have a label or tag marking the front.
- Drape it from front to back (or use the method your cover's instructions specify), guiding the mirror pockets over the mirrors as you go.
- Secure the elastic hem underneath the car, tucking it in evenly around all four sides so there's no loose flapping.
- If your cover has a buckle/lock strap underneath, fasten it — this is the biggest factor in wind resistance.
Removing the cover
- Shake off any pooled water or debris from the top before unclipping straps, so it doesn't run down onto the car or your hands.
- Unfasten straps first, then lift from the back to front, folding as you go rather than dragging it off — dragging can scratch the surface if grit has collected on the underside.
- Fold and store the cover somewhere dry between uses rather than leaving it balled up in the boot while damp.
